I am delighted to share a new category with you on the blog: interviews! I was thinking about something new for a while, and I really wanted to do something that would include my fellow interiorbloggers and/or –stylists. I think with this category that totally works!
So I contacted some of my favorite people and first up is Milou Nieuwenhuis, she runs the beautiful blog vanhetkastjenaardemuur. The name is so cool, since it’s Dutch for “sent from pillar to post”. How cute for an interior blog! I love Milou her style, to me it oozes serenity and attention to detail. I could definitely live there.
Milou answered my questions in Dutch, so I did the English translation. If you like to read the Dutch version – it’s below the English one.

How would you describe your interior style?
My interior is mostly Scandinavian with a personal touch and items with a personal story. All around the house you see black, white, grey and green. On top of that I love to use wood, to add warmth and coziness.
How do you make your interior personal?
I use a lot of handmade stuff and items with a story. An example is our TV-cabinet, it is made by my boyfriend and father-in-law. Therefor we could decide the measurements ourselves and now it is a one-of-a-kind. Actually, we felt it was completely finished when we bought some old, used army boxes that fit exactly under the cabinet. It is our item with our own story.
This “own story” is really important to me when it comes to furniture and accessories. I would choose a handmade and one-of-a-kind item any day over a shop item, but unfortunately money doesn’t grow on trees ;-). But I consider myself lucky that because of my blog I get to collaborate with designers and sellers of unique designs more and more!
How often do you change something about your interior?
Almost daily I change something. Once in a while (practically once a month) I take all of my accessories and put them on my dining table. Then I have a “blank canvas” from where I can give everything a new spot. This way I get to give every item the attention it deserves. I don’t move around furniture a lot, because I really love the way it is now. Maybe for the future, but I don’t feel the need to change just yet.
Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes daily through Pinterest, Instagram, but also from VTWonen (dutch interior magazine). I love going to big interior shops like Loods 5, but also smaller conceptstores like Sukha Amsterdam are very inspiring to me. The use of colors from Sukha is exactly my style.
What would you say is essential in an interior?
Something that’s personal! It is so easy to buy your stuff all at once in the same shop and leave it like that for years. That is not something I would do. Your interior can be built instead of having to be complete all at once. It doesn’t have to be too stationary, you can play and adjust! Try combining items and especially replacing, if there is no 100% match. Thankfully there’s Marktplaats!
Hoe zou je jouw interieurstijl omschrijven?
Mijn interieur zou ik omschrijven als Scandinavisch met een eigen tintje en spullen met een verhaal. Daarbij zie je overal in ons huis de kleuren zwart, wit, grijs en groen terugkomen. Daarbij gebruik ik graag hout, om warmte en sfeer toe te voegen.

Op welke manier maak jij je interieur persoonlijk?
Ik maak ons interieur persoonlijk door veel zelfgemaakte spullen en spullen met een verhaal toe te voegen. Een voorbeeld daarvan is ons televisiemeubel, wat gemaakt is door mijn vriend en schoonvader. Daardoor hebben we zelf de afmetingen kunnen bepalen en zo dus een uniek meubel kunnen creëren. Hij was pas eigenlijk echt helemaal ‘af’ toen we per toeval in een kringloopwinkel oude, verweerde legerkisten vonden die er precies onder passen. Al met al is het dus zeker geen standaardmeubel, maar eentje met een eigen verhaal.
Dit ‘eigen verhaal’ vind ik eigenlijk echt wel van belang voor alle meubels en accessoires. Het liefst verkies ik iets handgemaakts en unieks boven iets wat van een ‘standaard’ winkel komt, helaas laat mijn budget dat niet altijd toe ;). Maar ik heb wel geluk dat ik door mijn blog steeds vaker kan samenwerken met ontwerpers of verkopers van unieke designs.
Hoe vaak verander jij iets in je interieur?
Bijna dagelijks verander ik kleine dingetjes van plek. Eens in de zoveel tijd (zeker een keer in de maand) haal ik alle accessoires van hun plek, en zet ik ze op de eettafel. Dan heb ik een soort blanco canvas, van waaruit ik alles weer een nieuw plekje kan geven. Zo kun je al je spullen de aandacht geven die ze verdienen. Schuiven met meubels doe ik niet zo gauw, ook omdat ik heel tevreden ben over de opstelling nu. Misschien dat ik dat in de toekomst wel eens ga proberen, maar nu is die behoefte er nog niet.
Waar haal jij inspiratie vandaan?
Ik haal mijn inspiratie dagelijks van Pinterest, instagram, maar ook uit de vtwonen. Ook ga ik graag naar woonwinkels als Loods 5, voor de nodige dosis inspiratie. Kleinere conceptstores, als Sukha Amsterdam vind ik ook heel inspirerend (en het kleurgebruik past heel goed bij mijn eigen smaak).
Wat mag volgens jou niet ontbreken in een interieur?
Iets eigens! Het is zo makkelijk om in een keer al je spullen bij elkaar te verzamelen in dezelfde winkel (en het vervolgens ook tijden zo te laten staan), maar dat is niet iets waar ik zelf voor zou kiezen. Je interieur mag vanzelf ontstaan en hoeft zeker niet statisch te zijn, je mag ermee ‘spelen’! Durf spullen te combineren en vervang ook vooral iets, als je het toch niet bij je vind passen of er klaar mee bent. Daarvoor/Gelukkig bestaat er marktplaats!
