Interview with Iris from Enigheid.nl

A new interview on my blog and this time Iris from Enigheid.nl answered my interior related questions. She has some great tips for you! I’ve been following her Instagram for a while now and her home is truly unique. Combining design and thrift shop finds with soft colors, captured by a great photographer. Her photography style is very different than mine, and therefor very inspirational!

How would you describe your interior style?
By looking closely at what I like and what makes me happy. Of course I’ll consult my love, but he has faith in my stylistic skills. Other than that I try to look closely at what objects evoke in me, I don’t want to keep on buying and holding on to stuff just because it’s there and it’s pretty. Sometimes I take some risks, you can always say goodbye to stuff when it doesn’t suit in the end. And I am quite the collector, so I try to use things that remind me of happy days and my youth: with my little stove for example I have my grandpa’s old kettle and his pokes, these are very precious to me.

What is your ultimate budgettip?
Look at shapes and colors and then decide what fits you and your style. If you are able to do this, you’ll find nice interior objects everywhere, for example at places like thrift stores and flea markets. My most prized possessions are second hand. But also at low-budget stores you’ll be able to find stuff that fit your style. Think about the total concept you want to create in colors, shapes and themes. Don’t be reckless and buy everything you like, but keep your concept in mind. When you don’t buy everything you like, you might be able to save up for the things you really love.
One last tip: follow your favorite stores online (twitter, Facebook, email newsletters) so you know when they have their sale moments, on- and offline. But don’t be seduced to buy all the nice stuff. ;)

Where do you get your inspiration?
It’s such a cliche, but inspiration can come from everything. The most beautiful pictures on blogs, pinterest and magazines, events all about the latest design, but also a visit to town or the forest. It’s details, colors and forms that touch me all of the sudden. But what’s very important for me too is the fact that I surround myself with the best friends who have a similar look on their home and life. They inspire me, especially because they help me look at the world with other eyes.

What would you say is essential in an interior?
Humor, originality and reality. A home is to be lived in. I don’t show reality much in my online pictures (I just love pretty pictures so much more than unbalanced and chaotic ones) but at my place it’s a terrible mess most of the time and we use all the pretty design objects. And with a baby on the way it’ll be even more important to just live a little.
And humor and originality: those are the things that make life worth living if you ask me. So when I see a glass poodle which I think is funny or a print that makes me laugh out loud, I try to use it in my interior. I do try to let it fit my esthetics, because balance makes me feel at ease.

In what way do you use color in your interior?
I think color is one of the most important things in a home. Pretty and new color combinations are the biggest inspiration for me. I try to keep that in mind when buying or making things for my home, but it is pretty hard because my taste in colors evolves. I try to find combinations that are just a bit off, perfection is boring when it comes to colors. A big inspiration for me is designer duo Scholten and Baijings, they succeed in surprising me with their color compositions for years now. Their combinations are comparable with music, built from different tones, very inspiring.

Op welke manier maak jij je interieur persoonlijk?
Door vooral te kijken naar wat ik mooi vind en waar ik blij van word. Uiteraard betrek ik daar ook mijn lief bij, maar die heeft wat styling betreft veel vertrouwen in mij. Daarnaast probeer ik bewust te kijken naar wat spullen in mijn huis bij me oproepen en niet lukraak spullen in huis te nemen/houden. Ik neem soms ook bewust risico’s, sommige dingen ‘vallen’ pas thuis, je kunt altijd nog afscheid nemen als het toch niet bij je blijkt te passen. Als laatste ben ik nogal een verzamelaar en probeer ik ook spullen die mooie herinneringen hebben een plekje te geven in mijn huis: bij mijn kacheltje staat de oude ketel van mijn opa en zijn poken, die zijn me heel waardevol.

Wat is jouw ultieme budgettip?
Kijk goed naar vormen en kleuren en bedenk dan wat bij jou past. Als dit je lukt, kun je overal mooie spullen vinden en dus ook bij rommelmarkten en kringlopen. Daar vind ik de mooiste dingen. Maar ook bij winkels waar je het normaal niet verwacht (de echte budget-stores) vind je soms dingen die je eigen stijl versterken. Denk daarbij goed na over je concept, in kleuren, vormen en thema’s. Ga niet roekeloos in alles mee wat je mooi vindt, maar blijf denken aan het geheel en weet het verschil tussen iets leuk vinden en spullen die je echt raken. Doordat je niet alle leuke dingen koopt, kun je wellicht ook sparen voor de dingen die je echt wil hebben.
Een laatste tip: volg je favoriete winkels online (twitter, facebook, nieuwsbrieven) zodat je weet wanneer ze sale hebben. Maar laat je dan dus niet verleiden tot teveel kopen he? ;)

Waar haal jij inspiratie vandaan?
Wat een cliché, maar die kan overal vandaan komen. Van de mooiste foto’s die ik op blogs, pinterest en in bladen voorbij zie komen, evenementen met al het nieuws op het gebied van design, tot een middagje winkelen of wandelen in de bossen. Het zit hem vooral in details, kleuren en vormen die me soms ineens kunnen raken. Maar wat voor mij ook heel belangrijk is, is dat ik fijne vrienden om me heen verzameld heb die op eenzelfde manier naar hun huis en leven kijken als ik. Zij geven me ook vaak inspiratie, in die zin dat ze me anders laten kijken naar de wereld om me heen.

Wat mag volgens jou niet ontbreken in een interieur?
Humor, originaliteit en realiteit. Je interieur is om in te leven. Ik laat dat niet vaak in mijn foto’s online zien (want ik hou gewoon meer van mooie plaatjes dan van plaatjes die niet in balans zijn) maar bij mij thuis is het vaak een troep en gebruiken we alle (mooie) spullen gewoon. Die ruimte moet er gewoon zijn. En met een kindje op komst zal dat alleen maar meer zijn.
Wat betreft humor en originaliteit: dat zijn de dingen die voor mij het leven de moeite waard maken. Dus als ik een grappige glazen poedel zie, of een print waar ik hard om moet lachen, probeer ik die een plekje in mijn huis te geven. Waarbij ik het wel probeer in mijn concept te laten passen, want ik word rustig van balans.

Hoe gebruik jij kleur in huis?
Mooie en nieuwe kleurcombinaties werken inspirerend voor me. Ik probeer daar heel bewust mee om te gaan, maar vind het lastig omdat smaak in kleuren ontwikkelt en blijft veranderen. Als kleuren te goed bij elkaar passen wordt het saai, maar te bont is weer heel onrustig, die balans vinden is heel belangrijk. Ik probeer kleuren bij elkaar te zoeken die me verrassen en die net een beetje schuren, van het perfecte af zijn. Een grote inspiratiebron voor mij is ontwerp-duo Scholten en Baijings, zij slagen er al jaren in om mij te verbazen met vooral hun kleurencomposities. Hun combinaties zijn te vergelijken met muziekstukken, opgebouwd uit allerlei tonen, heel inspirerend om te zien.
