Interview with Souraya from Binti Home

I am very proud to announce a new interview on my blog, this time with Souraya from Binti Home! Souraya is an interior stylist and has her own blog filled with inspiration. Definitely worth a look, since she not only shares her own beautiful home, but also other inspiring interiors she photographed or beautiful photos from the trips she makes. Why I love following Souraya/Binti Home is because she has her own unique style that is very recognizable. She uses colors in a way that is very inspiring and so consistent that every room in her house matches the other perfectly. INTERVIEW | ENGLISH

How would you decribe your interior style?
My interior is a mix between modern and light Scandinavian with Arabic en Mediterranean influences. Those Arabic influences represent my Egyptian roots (I am half Egypt and half Dutch). I really like to work with muted earth tones in my home and styling jobs I do. My house really feels like a home.

How do you make your interior personal/all you?
The colors I decribed above really represent my personality. I use a lot of photos in my interior, for instance the three big photos hanging in my office space. I made these pictures myself during trips to Morocco and Egypt. These pictures give my office color, but are also a personal memory. These pictures are a piece of art on the wall to me, colorful and personal.

What is your ultimate budgettip?
Restoring furniture. For instance the round dining table and chairs I found on Marktplaats (Dutch marketplace, red.). I painted all of these items and this way they fit my interior perfectly and with a low budget.

How often do you change something about your interior?
Most of my interior, and by that I mean the basics, stay the same. For instance the couch and table stay in their same spot. When I moved in all the walls were white. Every couple of months I painted one wall, my hallway mint green, my kitchen yellow en the wall next to my dining table light grey. The accessories I use on the other hand regularly move to a different spot. Currently I’m thinking about the wall behind my blue cabinet! I really like slowly changing your interior, instead of doing it all at once.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Travel travel travel! I always bring my camera to document everything for my blog. But also Instagram is a favorite source of inspiration where I can follow my fellow bloggers and get inspired by their homes.

What is your favourite spot/area in your home and why?
My couch. When I sit down, I don’t want to get up anymore. But also the round dining table in my kitchen is a favorite of mine. I eat my breakfast here and enjoy time here with friends and my mother.

What do you love about your home and why is that?
The layout of the space, my couch is in the middle of the room and this way you create a cosy sitting area. But also the amount of light that enters the house through the huge windows. That light really made me fall in love with this place when I first visited.

What would you say is essential in an interior?
Color, and personal stuff that have a story. For instance products that you brought from a vacation or a trip. Or a nice piece of interior that used to belong to a relative. Try to mix these items with new stuff, but combine them with items from the thriftshop or small shops.

In what way do you use color in your interior?
I love color, especially muted earth tones: yellow ochre, camel, greens and terra. A lot of my furniture are very basic; grey, white and natural materials. Here and there some eyecatchers: my yellow chair, my blue cabinet or my dining chair from Zuiver in terracotta. These colors match the accessories and the colors on the wall. I think it’s very important to balance out your whole interior to make it all match!

Hoe zou je jouw interieurstijl omschrijven?
Mijn interieur is een mix van de moderne en lichte Scandinavische in combinatie met Arabische en mediterrane invloeden. De Arabische invloeden weerspiegelen mijn Egyptische roots ( ik ben half Egyptisch-half Nederlands). Ik vind het erg fijn om met vergrijsde aardetinten te werken in mijn interieur en mijn stylingprojecten. Mijn huis voelt echt als een thuis.

Op welke manier maak jij je interieur persoonlijk?
De kleuren weerspiegelen echt mijn persoonlijkheid. Ook heb ik op meerdere plekken in huis foto’s hangen. In mijn studio hangen er bijvoorbeeld drie grote foto’s op posterformaat welke ik heb ingelijst. Deze foto’s heb ik zelf gemaakt tijdens reizen door Marokko en Egypte. De foto’s zorgen voor kleur in een ruimte en een persoonlijke herinnering. Deze eigen foto’s zie ik als een kunstwerk aan de muur, het is kleurrijk en persoonlijk.

Wat is jouw ultieme budgettip?
Het opknappen van meubels. Zo heb ik een ronde eettafel met spijlenstoeltjes in mijn keuken staan welke ik allemaal op Marktplaats heb gekocht. Deze meubels heb ik allemaal in een andere kleur geverfd. Hierdoor passen de meubels perfect in mijn interieur maar heeft het mij niet veel gekost.

Hoe vaak verander jij iets in je interieur?
De basis van mijn interieur is eigenlijk al een jaar hetzelfde, denk aan de plek van de bank en de eettafel. Toen ik hier kwam wonen waren alle wanden in het huis nog wit. Om de paar maanden heb ik een wand geschilderd, zo werd mijn hal mintgroen, mijn keuken okergeel en het wandje bij de eettafel lichtgrijs. De accessoires in mijn interieur krijgen wel geregeld een andere plek. Daarnaast ben ik nu alweer aan het bedenken wat voor kleur de wand achter mijn turquoise kast krijgt! Ik vind het leuk om een interieur langzaam te laten veranderen.

Waar haal jij inspiratie vandaan?
Reizen, veel reizen! Ik heb altijd mijn camera bij mij om reportages te maken voor mijn blog. Maar ook instagram is een favoriete inspiratiebron waar ik bij mede bloggers kan meekijken en inspiratie haal uit al die mooie huizen.

Wat is jouw favoriete plek in huis?
Mijn bank. Als ik daar ga zitten kom ik daar voorlopig niet meer vanaf. Maar ook de ronde tafel in de keuken is een hele fijne plek. Hier ontbijt ik altijd en zit ik vaak met vriendinnen of mijn moeder.

Wat vind je mooi aan jouw woning en waarom is dat?
De indeling van de ruimte, zo staat mijn bank midden in de ruimte waardoor er een aparte zithoek ontstaat. Daarnaast het lichtinval, ik heb over de hele breedte van mijn huis hoge ramen en ook in de keuken een aantal. Dit lichtinval maakte mij meteen verliefd dit huis toen ik hier vorig jaar kwam wonen.

Wat mag volgens jou niet ontbreken in een interieur?
Kleur, en persoonlijke producten met een verhaal. Bijvoorbeeld producten die je hebt meegenomen van vakantie of een reis. Of een mooi stuk dat van een familielid is geweest. Probeer daarnaast een mix te maken in je interieur van nieuwe producten maar ook producten van een kringloop of kleine boetiekjes.

Hoe gebruik jij kleur in huis?
Ik houd erg van kleur en dan met name vergrijsde aardetinten : okergeel, camel, groentinten en terra. Veel van mijn meubels zijn allemaal redelijk basic in de kleuren grijs, wit en van natuurlijke materialen. Her en der wat eyecatchers met wat meer kleur zoals mijn okergele fauteuil, mijn turquoise kast of de eetkamerstoel van Zuiver in een terracotta kleur. Deze kleuren komen dan weer terug in de accessoires en in de kleur van de muren. Ik vind het altijd belangrijk dat er een balans ontstaat in een interieur!
