I could tell you lots of great things about this cardigan; it’s comfy, it looks great over maxi dresses, the wool is amazing, etcetera. But the absolute coolest part of it is that I knitted it myself! No, I had absolutely no idea I was able to do that but yes, I succeeded! Let’s talk more about this new hobby of mine – because it for sure is.
I was asked if I wanted to try out a kit and after carefully browsing their website I chose the We Are Knitters Simone Cardigan. What I wear daily are jeans and dresses, and I knew this cardigan would look good on either one of them. I was tempted by the white one shown on the website, but eventually chose grey as it’s a better color on me.
So this is what you receive at home; a bag with everything you need for this project.
If you are a beginner (like me), you don’t have all this at home so this is perfect! As you can see it’s a chunky yarn and the needles are size 15. I had to get used to the thick yarn at first but in the end it’s great because it knits super fast so it keeps you motivated. While I considered myself a beginner, I did know how to “straight knit”. I made a few scarfs and my mom would help me with everything else. This time I had to do it all myself, so I knew it would be more challenging.
While I am a beginner when it comes to knitting, I do have some experience with wool (clothing) and I was so pleasantly surprised by the quality of this beautiful yarn.
I cannot write this post without admitting I had some troubles while knitting. I had to start over a few times, didn’t always understand the instructions right away – so I definitely had to use all my perseverance to finish it. Blood, sweat and tears, quite literally! While this is beginners level, it has a few new techniques I didn’t know yet so with every new technique came a challenge. I was very happy with some knitting-friends I could contact via phone (you know who you are!) that would have my back when I had a little setback.
You knit the pieces separately, as you can see in the photo above. You end up with 5 pieces; the back, 2 fronts and 2 sleeves. You stitch them together and finally knit the collar.
The positive side of it was that this was luckily a chunky yarn which meant it knitted fast – so apart from the times I had to start over it went pretty quick! In the end I would’ve loved if it was a bit bigger, since it runs smaller than I thought it would. I knitted an M, am usually a size S but if I would re-knit it I would knit an XL. To make it extra big, chunky and comfy!
So while it was definitely a challenge for me and I had some moments where I wanted to quit, I am so (SO!) pleased I pulled through and now have my first hand-knitted cardigan. I already have my second kit on the way because I really want to keep up the new techniques I learned and I love that I’m now able to do this. So yay for me!
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask because I’d love to answer them! And a big thanks to We Are Knitters for sending me this kit, I am so happy with my new knitting skills.
Thank you for reading and have a great day!
