5 years ago we bought our house, who wants to see the before & afters?

Today exactly 5 years ago, on a Friday, we received the keys to our house. Two 25-year old people, knew nothing about renovating, bought a completely neglected, and damaged house. Little did we know, 5 years later we would still not be finished renovating, but ever so much in love with our house.

We truly love our house. While buying we had some reservations because it was such a big project to take on (and we actually had no idea how big it really would be), but we knew there were some things with the house that we would enjoy. Like the two bay windows, in our living room and bedroom. Or the doors that open to the garden. Or the spacious 2nd floor that is so nice to have. And it’s so funny reading those old posts, from 5 years back, and realizing how young and enthusiastic we were. Filled with energy to make this project our home. And we did, we really did ♥

So today I thought I would share some before & after photos because I know we all love them. I went back and forth over how extensive I should do this post, include stories, do it room by room, etcetera. But in the end, I decided to just share photos, share the extreme before & afters (and sometimes during as well) and link to the posts I wrote then. I might do some more posts about this in the future, in case you want to read more about our renovation story. But for now, let’s just enjoy these photos and for myself personally: realize truly how much hours we have spent to make this house as it is now.

I did a similar post when we celebrated 1 year of renovating, and that’s HERE. It features the old photos from the realtor so you can see it with furniture as well. The after photos however are not as accurate anymore, haha.

One last detail I want to share that I thought was pretty funny: our last (rental) home was completely black and white, if you’re a long-time follower you might know this still. When we bought this house, the initial plan was to incorporate color and adapt a different interior style than the very modern look we had in our previous home. And it’s so funny to see this looking back at the old photos, as our house is so colorful now. We made some mistakes when it comes to picking out colors, and this scared us and eventually we made everything white. And while I loved white then, I am so happy we went back to our original plan, because this 30’s house suits color. It fits the sphere. So it’s fun to see the developments we made on all aspects, and I’m happy to share them with you.

Now, enough chat. Let’s see some photos!

It took us 4 long months to finish our kitchen. Removing the old kitchen, removing all the plaster to show the original bricks, it was a hell of a job. But worth it for sure :)

Who remembers the time we had a piano in our hallway? loved it!

When we turned this room into a nursery when I was pregnant, we had to remove the damaged ceiling and this beauty popped up!

I know, those were a LOT of photos. But hey, it’s a big house and it’s 5 years of work. I really hope you liked it, I really enjoyed browsing through these old photos. Have a great day!

Love, Marrit
