Renovation pt 20: update 2nd floor

This week we were reminded (thank you Facebook!) that it’s been 2 years since we received the key to our house. It’s been a great 2 years, we are still very much in love with our home! It’s also been 2 years of renovating, even though after the first year we were in less of a hurray. Last year I gave you an update on 1 year of renovating, I still love seeing that blogpost. We did so much already! In the last few weeks we had a little setback in our renovation so I thought I would give you an update on what were doing at the moment.

Our house has a second floor where we have 2 rooms and a landing. We quickly renovated 1 room to give us a space for our administration (blogposts here and here). The idea was to – when we saved up more money and had the time – to completely redo this floor. Add a bigger dormer to the back of the house, 3 windows to the front. You wouldn’t recognize it and we were so excited and living to this moment for almost 2 years.

Until! We found out our house is monumental. We found out by accident, it was never mentioned in our papers when buying the house. And as you might know: this means you have to get approval for all big renovations. And then our plan was denied! So, at the moment we are reconsidering our options. Feeling really bummed, but trying to focus on the future and see what we can make of it.

So! We did already start on the renovation of our 2nd floor so let me show you what we did and the idea behind it. Don’t mind the ugly pictures, please.

This is the room I’m talking about. Pretty right, with the pink and purple wallpaper? The window you see on the right was supposed to get 3 times as big, creating more light and space.

The other side of the room (looking at the front of the house). We wanted to put 2 big windows in here, to make the whole diagonal part window.

But the biggest change we wanted to do here is remove the ceiling, this way you would look up to the top of our house. So we removed the ceiling (which is also the floor of the attic). And this is what it looks like now:

Yay! Can you imagine how cool this will be when finished? We will make it white to fit the rest of the house. Of course we will leave the beams visible, too pretty!

So this is what it looks like now. We’re in the process of reapplying for a permit and hoping our second try will be approved. I will keep you updated on the process!
