IKEA Svalnas

You probably didn’t know it, but this post has been due for a long time. The one wall in our livingroom that always felt unfinished, ever since we started living here 4 years ago. The wall without a clear function, and that was exactly our problem. Because what do you put here? It couldn’t be more messy at time, with all clutter ending here. Ugh. If you know me, nothing makes me more unhappy than clutter.

So as I could have known, it was screaming for a grand gesture. I love grand gestures when it comes to interior and would choose a big closet over 5 small ones any day.

As you might know we’ve had quite some things here we thought would do the trick. The latest project was this String Furniture workspace, see HERE. We loved the design, but the initial idea of doing the whole wall with String, would just get a little too expensive for us. I didn’t like the workspace as well sadly, it would make me feel “locked” and it was a bit too shallow for the size of my iMac. So as I’m typing this right now, I’m sitting at the dining table. I’m switching to a laptop anyway, so that solves our workspace problem.

Now let’s show you some more of that IKEA Svalnas closet!

The gorgeous Martinelli Luce Pipistrello Mini I wrote about recently got the perfect spot in this closet. This wall could use some lighting so this was the initial spot I had in mind for this light.

What I love about this closet also is the possibility it created for us to create an area for our 2-year old daughter Mia. We’ve had this Vitra Panton Junior chair before she was even born, and the size is perfect for this closet. The bottom shelves are for her to play with, and she really enjoys this. The wooden animals are by Ostheimer.

The perfect mess ♥

It took me a few days to decorate this closet. I wouldn’t say I’m the best at decorating such items, I feel it can be very hard. I simply started collecting all my favorite things from the house and took my time. I wanted it to feature books as well, so I started with those. Then I added the light and added some additional decorating like vases etcetera. I wanted it to be what I like to call, an “organized mess” and I’m very happy with the result. It’s filled with stuff we like and love, are dear to us in whatever way. And of course a few green plants to add sphere.

Books, our wedding album, a portrait of Mia I made, the golden globe we bought while on honeymoon, a plaster of Mia’s foot; all very special to us ♥

Needless to say we are very (VERY!) happy with this closet. It’s called Svalnas and it’s by IKEA. You can add anything you like; shelves, (small) closets and even a desk. It’s made of bamboo, which makes my sustainable heart very happy. It’s lightweight but capable of holding a lot of weight. Perfect for a wall closet. We chose a very symmetrical setup, but you’re free to do whatever you like with it. And that’s probably why we love it so much :)

Thank you for reading!

Love, Marrit
